Nestled amidst the lush forests of Wuling Mountain in China, the recently completed Wulingshan Eye Stone Spring spa by Vector Architects offers a captivating retreat for those seeking solace in nature’s embrace. Located in Aranya, China, the spa‘s design embodies a profound respect for its environment, gracefully integrating itself into the existing landscape without sacrificing functionality or beauty.

The spring house sits nestled in a picturesque river valley, a branch of the majestic Yanshan Mountains. On one side, a dramatic rock cliff stands guard, while the other opens up to panoramic views of fertile alluvial plains and a distant mountain range. Dense poplar trees create a verdant canopy, and a tranquil stream gently meanders through the site.

With a vision to create a seamless extension of the natural hot spring, Vector Architects prioritized minimal disruption to the landscape. The main building is elevated on ten slender columns, allowing the natural slope to remain undisturbed. As visitors approach the spa, they embark on a captivating journey, crossing a steel arch bridge over the stream and strolling through the serene forest. This path sets the tone for a profound connection with nature that awaits them within.

The spa’s functionality is cleverly distributed across a vertical layout. The western tower houses the hot spring bathing areas, while the eastern core accommodates transportation and service facilities. These two elements are connected by elegant bridge-like corridors on each floor.

This ingenious stacking not only minimizes the building’s footprint but also creates unique spatial experiences at different levels. As visitors ascend, the surrounding environment unfolds in captivating ways, revealing new perspectives of the lush poplar canopy, the imposing rock cliff, and the breathtaking mountain vistas.

Stepping inside, the journey continues. The first floor features an integrated teak box housing the reception, storage, locker room, and showering facilities. This central element anchors the space and provides a smooth transition from the external world to the spa’s tranquil interior.

The second floor is a true haven of relaxation. Floor-to-ceiling glass on all sides transforms this space into a transparent haven nestled amidst the poplar treetops. When weather permits, operable windows allow fresh air to circulate, further blurring the lines between the internal and external environment. Throughout the changing seasons, the spa offers a front-row seat to nature’s mesmerizing spectacle.

The crown jewel of the spa is nestled on the third floor, where a collection of bath pools, each with varying temperatures and unique water treatments, awaits. These serene pools are illuminated by a series of eight light wells, allowing natural light to cascade through the skylights. This light dances within the eight-meter-high wells, creating a gentle, diffused glow that is beautifully softened by the bush-hammered concrete walls.

Above the water’s surface on the west facade, strip windows present visitors with an enchanting choice. They can choose to fully immerse themselves in the calming embrace of the hot spring or steal a glance at the breathtaking valley cliffs and the vibrant forest canopy that envelops the building, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and natural beauty.
